Emme’s passion for birth began with the birth of her first baby in 1991. Birth was transformative and empowering and she loved being a mom. In 2000 when her last baby was weaning Emme started attending births with plans of one day becoming a midwife. Emme became an active doula sitting on the board of the Childbirth Collective and attending hundreds of birth in the home, birth center and hospital setting. Early in her doula career Emme witnessed her first home birth and knew immediately that she would be a home birth midwife.
Emme started her formal midwifery apprenticeship in 2003 and earned her Certified Professional Midwifery credential in 2008. Emme has had the privilege of working with many community midwives both traditionally and formally trained. Along with learning directly from midwives at over 100 births Emme attended the Farm Midwifery Training Center and was thrilled to learn directly from Ina May Gaskin, Pamela Hunt and the rest of the Farm Midwives. In 2005 Emme was accepted into an intensive internship at a busy birth center in the Philippines. While living and working at Mercy Maternity Center Emme was able to learn directly from mothers, babies and many foreign midwives. In addition to her apprenticeships and internships Emme is trained and certified in advanced neonatal life support and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Emme is a board member of the Minnesota Council of Certified Professional Midwives (MCCPM), Midwives Alliance of North America, The Childbirth Collective.
Emme lives in south Minneapolis with her husband Paul and a few pets. Her kids Noah, Levi and Sydney are big now and keep her endlessly entertained with their grown up antics.
Trillium MIdwifery Care

What areas do you serve? Minneapolis, St. Paul and surrounding suburbs
Who is your ideal client? My ideal client is a healthy, low risk pregnant person. Other than that I love working with all kinds of families, ones that are not like mine are usually my favorite and end up being pepole I wish I were friends with. Other than being low risk and pregnany I don't have a long list of criteria that people need to meet.
What do you want people to know about you/your practice? I have been in a small intimate midwifery practive for 13 years and attending births for almost 20 years. Birthing at home with a midwife is simply the sweetest and most intimate setting to bring your baby Earthside. I work with a small number of families each month in order to keep my care personal and intimate. I offer prenatal care visits on Tuesdays and Thursdays at my home office in Minneapolis. Call early for a complimentary consultation since most months I book to capacity.
What do you want people to know about home birth? It's safe- do your research about this. Some people have a multitude of misunderstandings about the safety of home birth and I'm here to say that for low-risk pregnancies and healthy birthing people home birth is safe, it's as safe as the hospital with way less surgical birth, pain meds use and other poor outcomes for the birthing person and the baby.
It's affordable- if the thought of paying out of pocket scares you away from home birth schedule a visit with a midwife and get the skinny about the cost. In many cases, it's cheaper than you would pay at the hospital or a birth center.
I have a strong passion for normal physiological birth and after working in all birth settings I see birth work best at home. People know how to birth and babies know how to be born. When the birth team has been carefully chosen and the birthing person is supported in the way they choose birth is at it's finest.
If you had a week off call + unlimited funds, what would you do? Travel...always travel! I just got back from a week off call and spent it in Bangkok and Chaing Mai Thailand with a few of my adult kids and partner Paul. Adventure travel with your adult children is divine! It was perfect, blissful week.
What do you do in your free time? I love to knit and work with my hands in a variely of mediums...pottery, fabric, textiles, beads. I recently made a giant vulva for a midwifery conference...It was a blast to make. I love to cook for people I love, dinner with friends and family is my jam. Being in nature, walking my dog, yoga, hiking, biking, swimming in the summer.
How many clients do you take per month? : Maximum five but I like to keep it smaller 2-3 is ideal.
